Our future English major

Last night, I was saying bedtime prayer with the three-year-old. It’s really cute; he grins the whole way through it, every time. He says it quietly, almost reverently, unlike grace at dinner. When we got to “Amen,” here is what he said:

Lightning McQueen is “A-car.”

At first I was wondering where that came from. Then I realized. So, I offered this:

“Yes, and you are A-boy.”

He giggled. I continued:

“And what would Mommy be?”

Without missing a beat: “A-GIRL!”

I’m tellin’ ya, for a child that young to get the subtleties of the English language like that? Well clearly, no question about it, he is most definitely a literary genius. Oh, the possibilities! Maybe someday he can be a blogger, just like Mommy. Or an English major, just like Daddy. Either way, we are lucky his wit is matched by his ability to charm the heck out of everyone. For that’s a quality that will come in handy when he spends time bartending, or working that second job at a book store, while he’s waiting for that first big book advance to come through in like 2027.

  1. You have a very practical outlook. When my son - also a charming and articulate guy - started waiting tables in college I said I thought that was a very important skill for a musician to have and almost 10 years later, it still is.
