Alarm clock haiku

Most weekdays, I wake up really early and walk for half an hour with my neighbor. If you had asked me before I had kids — or honestly, EVER — I would not have predicted myself to be the type to embrace morning exercise, especially as the direct trade-off is LESS SLEEP. Nevertheless, we’ve been doing this since September last year, and I have come to look forward to it most days. The early wake-up call has the interesting effect of making 6:15 feel like I’m stealing something by sleeping in.

(I tell you this not to be all sanctimonious, but more to explain why it is that I’m always cross-eyed tired by the end of the day… and why, come Thursday, I usually hit a cement-block wall of tired. But golly, I’m just so freakin’ fit!)

Today, I knew my neighbor wasn’t going to be walking, and I had every intention of getting up anyway and spending some time on my treadmill. Really, I did. But, without the “pressure” of knowing my neighbor was expecting me, I of course hit the snooze button. Like, five times.

So, while I laid in my comfy bed today in that coma half-sleep state, drifting in and out of consciousness (mostly out), I began composing haiku (haikus?) in my head, all of which had to do with choosing to stay in bed later than usual. I mean, I was counting syllables and everything, and even trying to remember if the 5-7-5 formula had additional rules, like number of words needed to comprise five syllables. Is that messed up? Does that make me a freak? Don’t answer that.

I fully intended to write them down as my morning blog post, but somewhere between the 4th snooze and the morning shower, I lost ‘em. And oh yeah, the DSL crapped out again, thus preventing me from a quick morning blog post. (Thanks, Verizon!) These haiku, they were brilliant. Of course. I don’t know why my best composing is done in my head when I can’t do a damn thing about it.

Now, it’s the afternoon witching hour and I’m essentially conscious (a point which you might debate, but it is what it is). I am cooking dinner heating up chicken nuggets and fries in the oven.  The kids are yelling at each other quietly playing video games. So, here are a few quick haiku (is it haiku or haikus? Anyone? Buehler??) for both of my readers to enjoy with their pre-dinner cocktails:

My alarm goes off

Rings at six a.m., so loud

Hit the snooze again

Mommy likes to sleep

Early walk’s overrated

Let me snooze some more

Obsessed with my blog

Writing haiku in my sleep

What is wrong with me???

    danke!

  2. Some nights when I can’t sleep (in several cases, when I took a mild painkiller without realizing it would keep me up) I would compose the most BRILLIANT bits of prose prior to passing out. Seriously, I’d write and then rewrite them in my head several times. They were gone with the wind when I woke up, which was probably just as well because I probably don’t do my best work under insomnia conditions. ;-)

  3. In follow-up, I must confess that rainy morning trumped treadmill again today. And just like that, I’m a little less “fit,” but that much more well-rested. Oh well, there’s always next week.

  4. Wow, you are really smart in your sleep!

  5. Thank God I’m not the only one obsessed with their blog. Or other people’s blogs. Or blogging in general. Or blogging is the greatest thing to happen to women since EVERYTHING because it is unbelievable and supercedes anything else.

Including housework. And having a life.

Anyway, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one. And by the way, I am convinced that whatever comes to you as you wake up is the clearest and purest thought ever. I’ve had some real revelations while hitting the snooze button.
