Time To Change
I post this in honor of my oldest son, who is nearly 13. Lately his looks are changing – he’s getting the first wisps of dark hair on his upper lip, and – oh yes – his voice is changing. And, because I am a child of the 1960s, I can’t hear an adolescent boy’s voice crack without thinking about this Brady Bunch episode, where Peter’s voice was changing and it was, like, totally messing up his singing.
I’m thankful I survived those years, and even happier that I don’t have do ’em over. (Can I get an “Amen!”?) And now, while I’m still a little bit misty-eyed and feeling sentimental, I’m going to go hug my son extra-hard…even though he’ll be rolling his eyes and sighing about it the whole time and telling me to STOP IT, MOM!
Why don’t you go on ahead and do the same?
awww! meggy!
and wtf! uhh, your boys are not allowed to be teenagers! hello, they’re baby boys! hmmph.
:)
You know how you turn around when you hear a child call “Mom” in a public place? Wait until their voice becomes like a man and you turn around when you hear a man’s voice say “Mom”.
My middle son will be 13 in May, but no changes yet!
By the way…I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Brady Bunch video. I am a little bit of a “Brady Bunch Dork”.
Wash, I KNOW, seeing as how I am still 25, it can’t possibly be that my kids are growing up this fast!
Rachael, my sister and I watched every episode after school – they were on at 4pm and we would race to see who could guess first which episode it was. I think my favorite is probably the Davey Jones one, but you gotta love the ones where the whole gang got together to sing, Partridge-family style!
No. The best was when Jan was having a bit of a mid-life crisis hissy fit at age 12 becasue she was the middle girl, and made up a boyfriend named Joe Glass to get attention and her wacky aunt came to visit, and convinced her that being in the middle was just fine. Jan was my favorite, she was clearly headed to therapy later in life…
Joe Glass! Totally forgot about the imaginary boyfriend. Heh heh.

And I didn’t even watch the video.
I liked the one with Bebe Galini. Oh, and the multi-parters were always good, like the one in Hawaii. And who can forget, “Something suddenly came up”??? As well as the one where Carol loses her voice and can’t sing for church at Christmas, until she wakes up humming and how much it bothered me that when they cut from the humming to the singing, there was a key change.
And the Silver Platters.
I could go on and on and on and on, and I have not watched this show for YEARS.
Bets, it tends to stick with a person, doesn’t it?? I will never forget the baked beans in the flashlight on the Grand Canyon multi-part episode, or how they got locked in the jail in the ghost town!
Haha! Bobby’s Jesse James dream was oddly scary, I remember thinking.
OH, I so remember this episode.
My son turns 5 tomorrow and I’m super emotional about it. My little boy–5! So, yep, this made me cry.
